Dr. Sanders contrasted his approach to providing the voters with information on his positions on the issues with that of Congressman Buyer.

Dr. Sanders stated, "There are two conditions necessary for an electoral democracy to thrive. The first is authentic choices between candidates. The second is an electorate that is educated about the choices that face them. Political campaigns that are based almost exclusively on purchased access to the media (television, radio and newspaper advertisements) or organized mailings and telephone blitzes are detrimental to the fulfillment of those conditions.

"The Vote Smart project is one of the ways that voters can determine where the candidates stand on the issues. It is a nonpartisan Internet-based program in which every candidate is invited to participate. My positions are included. Congressman Buyer refused to provide this essential information to the voters.

"The Federal Voting Assistance Program provides information for overseas military personnel about candidates for office. It is a product of the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act. I chose to participate in the program and reach out with a telephone message to U.S. military personnel, their families, and other citizens overseas. Congressman Buyer, despite his professed concern for overseas military voters, did not take this chance to speak with our overseas military personnel.

"Congressman Buyer’s approach to these matters is consistent with his approach to constituent concerns. No response."
